Christmas time is coming. For those seeking a meaningful Christmas, it’s also an opportunity to reflect and create cherished moments. It’s that special time of the year where you consume more alcohol, eat way too much food, and buy gifts you don’t want or have to spend hundreds on selfish kids desperate for the latest gadgets.
But hang on, another thing happened on Christmas Day, what was it? Oh that was the birth of Jesus Christ, God manifest, the most holiest day in the Christian calendar, celebrated with a meaningful Christmas.
So how have we been distracted from the celebration of the most important spiritual figure in history to a fat man in a red suit, drunk driving around the world at Christmas time?
OK I’m just having fun here but it’s interesting that the holiest day has been stolen by a figure created by corporations to solely feed your own desires rather than focus on celebrating meaningfully this Christmas.
Meaningful gifts this christmas
Christ’s gift at Christmas is the gift of giving, of generosity, of kindness and compassion to others, but Santa, or is that Satan, distracts you and makes it about self-indulgence, not selflessness.
Of course you can give a gift but it’s just a token gesture so that you can practice the art of giving and generosity. It’s also about thinking of others who may be struggling. Maybe a family member. Maybe a friend you know is alone, and you can offer them a seat around your table for a Christmas celebration full of meaning.
But the devil of desire doesn’t want that. He is out to change the notion of generosity into rampant greed and wanton desires. The kids don’t just want gifts, they must be expensive. Who cares about the Uncle Buck all alone, I want my family Christmas, my Christmas turkey, laced with alcohol, and so stuffed with food and booze that I stare listlessly at the television for the rest of the day. Waiting for tomorrow when you guessed it, the only thing I am interested in is the Boxing Day sales, so I can go out and feed my devil’s desires even more.
Christmas is for giving.
There is plenty for me but nothing for you, poor homeless person. I would give a shit but my mind is consumed with consuming things not even a single selfless thought can arise.
So please stop and think about the true meaning of Christmas, even if you’re an atheist. Don’t worry too much about expensive gifts. Try to teach your kids about giving to those with less. Make a donation to charity for a Christmas filled with meaning. Enjoy your meal and day by all means but truly appreciate family, food, and having a good life.
Merry Christ-Mass.
Watch out for Satan, sorry Santa, and focus on having meaningful moments this Christmas.
