Prince William is head of a charity that deals with mental health. He will even appear on a talk show to be open about his own struggles about a father. It’s great that people are talking and yes, the rich have their struggles too.
But how can we expect people to have good mental health when the jobs they have to work at are low-paid or zero hours contract. The bills are paid and there is not much left over. How can you enjoy life, such as go to the gym or have a swim. Maybe take a cheap holiday away at least twice a year. Or visit the countryside in your own countryside.
It might not just be those on the lowest wages. You might be a couple with two kids, a mortgage and a child to keep. Maybe your average wages are 28k per annum per head. And once the bills are paid all you do is exist in front of the television set. And you wonder why people drink. Or live in stressful relationships that can lead to arguments or worse violence.
Sometimes even those who appear wealthy say 100k per year are also trying to keep it together. Maybe they’ve bought a 1 million pound house and are now slaves to their mortgages or have punishing work schedules and they rarely see their kids.
Dealing with mental health is dealing with societies wrongs such as low pay or affordable housing. Maybe a good work life balance. Once the bills are paid there must be enough left over to go out once a week. Even if it’s wetherspoons for the poor or somwhere posh for the rich.
We should be able to go to the gym and swim at the weekends. Eat healthy food if it is affordable and yes put a but of money away so you can on a holiday. Even if it’s a week in Spain or Madeira.
How can we feel good about our mental health when we work to our bones? Maybe Prince William should be advocating for higher wages say a minimum 15GBP per hour or fair wages in companies.
I have my proposal. A proportional wage mechanism. If you work for a company and the CEO earns millions then good luck. But if the receptionist earns 25k per annum but lives inn London and she cannot live a meaningful live then she should be able to complain to HR or the council and the company wages can be reassessed so that if need be the top highest earners can earn 5 to 15% less and increase the wages of the poorer workers. This ensures satisfaction and fairness all around.
With meaningful wages you can live a meaningful life and if you are still struggling after that. Than you do need help and society can assist you.
